More Than One a Day Exhibition, 13th - 15th June, 2017 - CDU Library
There are two hobbies I am very passionate about; painting and running. I wanted to do a creative study that explored my artistic practice whilst also benefiting my athletic lifestyle, so choosing apples was an easy decision. They are a rich source of soluble and insoluble fibre assisting the gut to perform properly, as well as balance sugar and cholesterol levels. As an art subject, apples are quite versatile. Whether you’re studying the interior, exterior, flavour, size or type, there are many approaches to take and perspectives to look at.
Apples are such a popular and recognizable fruit and I thought the best place to start would be inside Woolies and Coles. It was interesting to see people grabbing the apples that were stacked in the trays. One by one, an empty space would appear and those spaces felt and looked just as important as the remaining apples in the tray. It felt as if the people who took those apples were now subconsciously part of the piece.
I believed I had something visually and conceptually strong, so I started painting apples all day every day, as well as eating them. I began to see a positive, healthy change in my diet. As well as this, it allowed me to explore all aspects of the apple, such as the interior of the apple and the tree it grows from. These simple studies prompted my enthusiasm and I soon discovered what can be creatively achieved with the inspiration of a single subject.
For me, watercolour and acrylic are like Pink Lady and Granny Smith. They both need to be utilized to have an all-round better result aesthetically and tastefully.
