Spring 2024 in the Red Centre saw some particular wildflowers bloom back strongly, especially around areas where Buffel has been cleared, one being The Billy Buttons - Calocephalus platycephalus. Native to Aus and NZ, these small shrubs can grow up to 50cm. It’s leaves are 5mm - 15mm, smooth, hairy and grow vertically hugging its shoot. The density of the small shrub is a good filter for Dandelion seeds ‘cypselae’ to get caught on and you won’t see many bugs other than ants foraging on them.
The yellow is a sight to see around town when these are in bloom, and you’ll often find them near the Everlasting flowers, a haven for bees, moths and small insects. The two flowers near each other provide a great example of a healthy ecosystem.
