This painting is a culmination of concepts regarding the introduced species to Australia, Buffel grass. Since it’s introduction to the land in the early 1900’s to help cattle grazing, reduce dust and hold the soil together, it’s also shown it’s sinister side. Its rapid widespread growth due to the wind and rain has essentially attacked a lot of native species. The buffel burns at a much higher rate than native grasses and shrubs, so it carries the fires through the land, burns trees, native habitats for the animals and can grow back quite easily too.
The painting explores the movement of the buffel grass in the drought with wind assisting. It shows its solidity in the central Australian earth, and it overpowering effect on the natural scenery that surrounds us. Fortunately, we can still see the beauty in the land and there are a lot of people working on maintaining and eradicating this weed.
