My memory of this tree is of Nightcliff beach when you have to tip-toe your way through the fallen spiky cones on the ground to get to the sand. You’ll come across Casuarina Equistifolia (Sheoak) on Australia’s coastal areas near water, or more inland where they have been planted as a great source of shade. The cones/apples are 10-20mm long and when they’re not dried out and hurting our feet as we approach the beach, they can be chewed on which will activate your saliva glands, reducing dry mouth. I wanted to paint this in a manner that resembled the salty seabreeze by the water.
