This painting of an ash patch is a response to the 2023 bushfires surrounding Alice Springs (Mparntwe) that was fuelled by Buffel Grass. An invasive and destructive grass that is not yet declared a weed, but has been long advocated to become one by the community since its arrival in the 50’s to help with soil erosion and cattle grazing. The grass has gone beyond an eradication point, however raising awareness might help stop its destruction through the community, destroying eco-systems and homes.
Buffel has been embedded into the work to symbolise it’s physical impact.
